Where Singles’ Day comes from

Singles’ Day started in China in the 1990s as an informal celebration of being single. The most common story links it to students at Nanjing University, who chose 11 November because the date, 11/11, looks like four ones standing alone. The custom spread from campuses into wider society as a day for single people to meet friends and treat themselves.

In 2009 Alibaba ran a Singles’ Day sale on its shopping platform, and the idea took off. Within a few years 11.11 had become a huge online sales event in China, and Alibaba’s international marketplace, AliExpress, brought it to shoppers around the world. Today many other platforms and brands in Asia, Europe and the Americas join in.

Singles’ Day 2026: dates and timing

Singles’ Day 2026 is on Wednesday 11 November 2026. The date never changes, but the sales around it usually last longer than one day:

• Warm-up period. In recent years AliExpress has opened a warm-up phase a few days before 11 November, when you can collect coupons and add items to your cart before prices drop.
• Main sale. The biggest discounts usually start at midnight on 11 November, local time or China time depending on the platform. In 2025 AliExpress’s main 11.11 sale ran for about a week after the date.
• Black Friday follows. Many of the same stores move straight into their Black Friday sales, which lead up to Friday 27 November 2026.

As of mid-October 2026, the exact 2026 schedules haven’t been officially announced, so check each store’s app or homepage for the final dates and time zone.

AliExpress

AliExpress treats 11.11 as one of its biggest events of the year. Expect platform-wide coupons, extra discounts from individual sellers and deals on electronics, phone accessories, tools, home gadgets and hobby supplies. Temu

In Southeast Asia, marketplaces such as Lazada and Shopee run large 11.11 campaigns. Some Western brands, especially in beauty, fashion and consumer tech, also hold Singles’ Day promotions, although most US retailers save their main push for Black Friday.

How to prepare for 11.11

1. Add items to your cart or wishlist early. Note the current price of each one so you can compare later.
2. Collect coupons during the warm-up. Many platform coupons must be claimed in advance and have minimum spend levels.
3. Plan orders around minimum spends. Combining items into one order can unlock a bigger discount, but only if you actually need the extra items.

• Check the final total. Import taxes, duties and handling fees on low-value parcels have changed in several countries recently. Look at the total at checkout, not just the item price.
• Read the return policy before buying. Return rules, free-return options and time limits differ by platform, country and seller. Keep order confirmations and take photos if an item arrives damaged.
• Use buyer protection. Open disputes through the platform rather than paying or arranging returns outside it.
