Where to shop this Black Friday

Black Friday is the biggest shopping day of the year for many stores, but the best prices rarely appear only on that one Friday. This guide covers how the event works in 2026, where the deepest discounts usually show up, and how to make sure a “deal” really is one before you pay.

What Black Friday is

Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving in the United States. The name is usually traced to Philadelphia in the 1960s, when police used it to describe the traffic and crowds that filled the city the day after Thanksgiving. The popular story about stores going “into the black” came later.

Today Black Friday is as much an online event as an in-store one, and it has spread well beyond the US. Retailers in the UK, Europe and many other countries now run their own Black Friday sales on the same weekend, even where Thanksgiving isn’t celebrated.

Small Business SaturdaySaturday 28 November 2026A push to shop at independent and local businesses
Cyber MondayMonday 30 November 2026Online-focused deals, often extended into the following days

In practice, “Black Friday” has become a season. Large retailers usually start early Black Friday promotions in late October or the first weeks of November, then add new deals each week. For example, Amazon’s Black Friday Week in 2025 ran for 12 days, from 20 November to 1 December, according to Amazon’s own announcement. As of mid-October 2026, most big US retailers have not yet published their full 2026 schedules, so check each store’s site as November approaches.

Where the biggest discounts usually are

Electronics

TVs, laptops, headphones, tablets, smart speakers and game consoles are where Black Friday has historically been strongest. Big-box and online retailers such as Amazon, Best Buy and Walmart usually compete hard on these, and brand stores like Samsung often run their own promotions on phones, TVs and appliances. Browse the electronics category to see current offers in one place.

Fashion and sneakers

Clothing and footwear brands often run sitewide percentage-off sales or extra discounts on items that are already marked down. Sportswear brands such as Nike and Adidas, and fast-fashion stores, tend to be active over the whole weekend. The fashion category collects these deals.

Home, beauty and toys

Kitchen appliances, vacuums, bedding and smart-home devices are common Black Friday staples. Beauty retailers often discount gift sets, and toy prices tend to drop as stores fight for holiday shoppers.

Digital services and software

Web hosting, VPNs, online courses and design tools often have their lowest prices of the year around Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Hosting providers such as Hostinger usually tie the best rates to longer plans, so look at the renewal price as well as the first-term price.

A step-by-step plan for Black Friday

  1. Make a short list now. Write down what you actually need, the exact model or size, and the most you’re willing to pay.
  2. Record today’s prices. Note the current price of each item in October so you can compare it with the “sale” price later.
  3. Set up accounts in advance. Log in to the stores you plan to use, save your address, and check whether a free membership gives early access or free shipping.
  4. Add items to wishlists or carts. Many stores notify you when a saved item drops in price, and checking out is faster when stock is limited.
  5. Check for coupons before you pay. Look at the coupons above and the store pages on FutureCoupon. Some stores allow a coupon on top of a sale price; others don’t, and the checkout will tell you.
  6. Buy when your target price appears. If an item hits the price you wrote down, it’s usually better to buy than to wait for a slightly better deal that may sell out.
  7. Keep your receipts and order emails together. They make returns and price-adjustment requests much easier.

How to tell a real deal from a fake discount

A big “was” price crossed out next to a smaller one doesn’t prove you’re saving money. Some sellers raise prices in the weeks before Black Friday, or compare against a list price that nobody actually charged. A few simple checks help:

  • Look at the price history. For Amazon, free tools such as CamelCamelCamel and Keepa show how an item’s price has moved over months. If the “deal” matches the normal price from September, it isn’t a real discount.
  • Compare the same model at several stores. Use the exact model number, not just the product name.
  • Watch for special Black Friday models. Some TVs and laptops sold during the sales are variants with slightly different model numbers and specs. Check the details, not only the screen size or brand.
  • Be careful with countdown timers. Urgency is part of the marketing. A good price on an item you need is a deal; a fast timer on an item you don’t need is not.
  • Treat coupons from unknown sites with caution. Our guide on how to spot fake coupons online explains the warning signs.

Returns and shipping notes

Many large retailers extend their return windows for holiday purchases. In recent seasons Amazon, for example, let most items bought from 1 November be returned until 31 January, with some exceptions. Policies change every year and often exclude certain categories, so check each store’s current holiday return terms before you buy.

  • Electronics, opened software and personal-care items often have shorter or stricter return rules.
  • On marketplaces, items sold by third-party sellers may follow the seller’s own policy rather than the store’s.
  • Free-shipping thresholds and delivery times can change during busy weeks. Check the delivery estimate at checkout, especially for gifts.
  • If a price drops after you buy, ask whether the store offers a price adjustment. Some do for a limited time; many don’t.

Tip: the weekend doesn’t end on Friday. Many online deals continue or change on Cyber Monday, so if something you want isn’t discounted on Black Friday, check again on Monday.

The coupon list on this page updates as stores add their Black Friday offers, and expired coupons are removed automatically. FutureCoupon may earn a commission from some store links, which doesn’t change the price you pay. If you find a working code we don’t have yet, you can send it in with the Submit Coupon button.

Black Friday FAQ

When is Black Friday 2026?

Black Friday 2026 is on Friday 27 November, the day after US Thanksgiving on Thursday 26 November. Cyber Monday follows on Monday 30 November.

When do Black Friday sales start?

Many large retailers start early Black Friday deals in late October or early November and add new offers each week. Amazon's Black Friday Week in 2025, for example, ran from 20 November to 1 December. Check each store for its 2026 dates.

Is it better to buy on Black Friday or Cyber Monday?

They overlap a lot. Large electronics and in-store doorbusters are often strongest on Black Friday, while software, subscriptions and online-only codes are common on Cyber Monday. Buy whenever an item reaches the price you planned to pay.

Can I use a coupon code on a Black Friday sale price?

Sometimes. Some stores allow a code on top of sale prices, while others exclude sale items. Try the code at checkout and read the offer terms.

Do Black Friday deals happen outside the US?

Yes. Many retailers in the UK, Europe and other regions run Black Friday sales on the same weekend, both online and in stores.

How do I know a Black Friday discount is genuine?

Compare the sale price with the item's price history over the past few months, using a price tracker or your own notes. Check the exact model number at more than one store.
